A Few Favorite Places and Tools for Words

Just wanted to list some of my favorite copyediting hang outs…

1. Style is important for words and for using words. No place better for style than a style manual. While I use Associated Press and Chicago style, I like the interface for the online Chicago Manual of Style.

2. For the longest time, I limped along using the free online version of dictionaries. I now pay for the online version of Merriam-Webster and it has been awesome. Countless words at my fingertips! If you use a dictionary a lot, it is a great tool.

3. Ever get confused about words? Then Copyediting will sort you out. The blog is great and dips into the weeds of all sorts of controversial word debates.

What are your favorite tools for what you do?

If I Started Blogging Today I Would….

If I started blogging today I would decide on how to incorporate all of my interests into my blog and make sure that there exists flexibility in such a design. It’s what I’m trying to do during this blogathon because I spent so much time blogging about creativity and then realized that as much as I wanted to focus on a niche, there were many other pieces of me that make up my whole.
For example, I spend a lot of time reading and reviewing books. I’m a parent of three. I’m a writer and editor of fiction and nonfiction. I live on coastal North Carolina and grew up in Denver. I love blogging for Women on Writing and I’m developing an online class about editing.
So, if I started blogging today, I would try to incorporate more about the me that I am (and my wide range of interests) so that the blog could grow with me, instead of getting stuck about what to write for my blog when I don’t fit my blog tagline anymore. I lost the flow when I didn’t fit the tagline. Now I’m just trying to flow and be me.

Creativity Comes Alive

While I love my son’s adorable monsters and my daughters’ interpretation of our family tree, ordering the school sponsored art-as-parental-tchotchke is not always something that I favor. An iPad cover with colorful creatures is fine among family and friends, but it might be more difficult to pull off in a business meeting. But when the kids gave me a bit of a guilt trip about not ordering, my husband forwarded me this article about a company that makes . That I can handle. Who doesn’t want to cuddle with their kid and their creation.
I’m just not going to show it to my kids yet. I want to find the perfect creatures to have come alive. I’ll post some pictures soon and get your input.
