While shopping for some books on creativity, I started thinking about the cost of creativity. If I didn’t buy the books, would I be less creative? If I didn’t light a candle or use a fountain pen, would my creative work suffer? Probably not. While sometimes the props can help get into a creative mood, placing my mind in a creative frame is most important. And it is not something I need to spend a fortune on.
Remember as a kid when some of the best play happened with an empty box or cardboard from paper towel
or toilet paper rolls. I watch my kids as they traverse the glove with string, a box and some tape.
As an adult, finding creativity might not include pretending to be a knight living in a refrigerator-box castle. But tapping into my creativity might include listening to music that has helped transport me before. Or brainstorming an idea with a friend over lunch.
Whatever your passion, getting into the right space is also a creativity enhancer. Some days, for me, finding my muse may involve sitting at my dining room table and feeling the wood grains while I doodle on a piece of paper. Or perhaps finding a cozy corner at your local coffee shop.
If you still think creativity might be expensive, then try using to figure out how to do things more inexpensively…and more creatively.
Creativity is not expensive. Your brain power is free.
