“Hometime” and One eskimO Fill My Home’s Airwaves

It’s been a week since I went to the One eskimO concert in Raleigh and, as soon as I returned, I put on the free promotional disk provided to me by Shangri-La Music and One2One Network. It’s One eskimO’s self-titled debut CD and, reading the promotional material, I learned the band has opened for Tori Amos, Bob Schneider and Gomez. The band opens for Micheal Franti and Spearhead during 2010 dates. (Check them out if they come your way!)
It’s so easy to pretend that I control the airwaves in my home. But, in reality, my children do. I have to admit, I had to hide the CD at one point. Then I missed hearing Kristian Leontiou’s soft voice supported by his band mates, drummer Adam Falkner, bassist and horn player Jamie Sefton, and guitarist Peter Rinaldi.

It’s been non-stop One eskimO at our house. Almost 24/7. My kids spend the time insisting I dance and sing with them to “Kandi” (which has been at the top of charts in April and May) or sway to “Chocolate”…and every song in between. The songs embrace pockets of relationship angst, which, fortunately, is lost on the 6- and 3-year-old crowd. Our family is enjoying every replaying of the CD.
The music is rooted in reality, with an ethereal quality. The influences the band mention include “The Beatles and The Fugees to Massive Attack and UK hip-hop/folk duo Nizlopi”
I try not to explore music too much. I find I’m often contradicted when I make comparisons, so I try to avoid them. Having said that…there are elements of the band’s style that reminds me of the early 1990 break-out sounds of the duo Everything But the Girl. You may listen to them–or see their fun animations–and the band will remind you of something else. No matter. They are a creative group and I look forward to their next album…dancing, swaying and singing along. EVERY. DAY.
