I know when I get busy I often get stuck in the creative “shoulds.” I pack guilt around the pleasures I “should” be doing. Unfortunately, this starts to imbue a negative aura to something that is a positive act. Anxiety or an uneasy feeling replaces the joy and feeling of accomplishment that would normally accompany my creative acts. The guilt often can compound, helping to build resentment around what I’m spending my time doing. After all, it’s keeping me from my creative actions, which in turn gives me an inner fulfillment.
Stepping back, I find that I need to re-direct my energy and accept that I am not able to always complete a creative act. By re-directing the energy, I’m better able to embrace and re-connect with my creativity. Perhaps it happens while I’m doing the dishes or while waiting for a friend. I can use that energy, not getting mad at myself, but finding how to utilize what energy I have.
At least that is what I “should” be doing…it doesn’t always work that way. But by thinking about shifting my energy, my mind takes over and helps me change the negative to a positive.
You “should” try it.
