Wrapping creativity and business together

After I received my master’s in creative writing, I realized that I might be more well-rounded and skilled as a writer, but my publishing acumen was only slightly improved. I needed to know more about the publishing world. The business I wanted to launch into, freshly printed novel and all. I think that keeping the right and left sides of the brain engaged helps to create a stronger creative class.
One college appears to be doing just that. According to Ringling College of Art and Design in Sarasota, Fla., it is launching a new bachelor’s program, which they believe is the first in the nation. It is innovative in embracing business schooling with art schooling, while open to those students interested in a variety careers (including law, banking, management).
From a press release, “The Business of Art and Design, ‘is the first to integrate the study of business and the study of studio art and design — marrying the right and left brain into one practice. With a solid grounding of business skills, an understanding of the creative process, the reputation of a world-class art and design institution, and the ability to work effectively with other creative individuals, successful students will be able to take advantage of design concepts and design practice as integrated parts of strategic planning, as well as leverage learned leadership skills with the confidence to think creatively themselves to realize their own visions of success,’ explains Dr. Wanda V. Chavez, lead faculty member of the new program.”
An amazing idea and hopefully one that will catch on.
