When I’m trying to focus on a project, I make the most inroads by listening to classical music, often it can be in a loop, replaying a couple times if I’m really focused. Listening to something with lyrics is distracting to me, as if the words of the song are bumping into the words in my mind that I’m trying to get pushed out to the page.
Somewhere in the back of my head, I probably also realized music affected my energy levels as well. As artists, it’s pretty easy to transport our music to where ever we want. Frequently we take our music with us for artistic purposes…or for energy purposes. Let’s face it, there is an obvious difference in your energy when you are listening to Muzak in an elevator versus the throbbing beat at a nightclub (or health club’s aerobic class).
In Amy Fries’ blog post on the Psychology Today site, she discusses how music affects us and our minds. She ends with some questions about what you listen to, are you aware of how it affects your creativity and mood, and have you ever experimented with listening to music to see how it affects you?
My question is: What are you listening to now?

I’ve been putting off finishing a cover letter for a sous chef . . . it just didn’t seem like a challenge and I kept losing my focus. Turned on one of the Sirius light classical channels, and Rimsky-Korsakov helped propel me past my doldrums.
Beautiful music can either soothe or energize me, and push past those brick walls we hit sometimes.
I love it and can wholeheartedly agree about hitting the brick wall! It is amazing how music can help me find my focus.
I wonder would you use a different piece of music for another kind of resume?
Thank you for sharing!
