When are you the most creative?

I was talking with a friend who is a wonderful graphic designer. I dabble in layout design; she is a master of graphic design. Just like my keyboard is similar to me hopping on a bicycle, reaching for Illustrator is her reaching for a bicycle.
She’s helping me on a project I’m working on and the conversation meandered into the idea of creativity and how we process “it.”
We discussed how we each process our own work. For instance, as a writer and mother of three, I often don’t have time to sit and write, write, write. I spend a lot of time developing my ideas in my head. Then, when I have the time, I write, write, write. By then, I’ve a skeleton of the piece in my head and can sit and fill out the body of the writing. But I thought that was just writing. I figured when I work with design, I’m doing it from the uncomfortable hot seat. Oddly, she does the same thing with her design work and finds herself in the hot seat when writing.
How do you start working with an idea? When creativity strikes, what are you doing and how to you fulfill the process?
