The space of creativity

While reading this blog post–How rooms and architecture affect mood and creativity–I couldn’t help but stare at the luscious photos. Soon the words were incidental. The photos transported me from my well-worn work space, each surface covered with papers or books. (It is a mess, but it is my organized mess.) The photography in the blog is stunning. The spaces are even more so. I could practically hear the water and peace, my mood shifting along. Even though I’m married to an architect, I’ll make do with our cozy 1916 Craftsman home. I doubt we’ll be able to build something that would incorporate all I need, outside of a door that locks.

But that doesn’t mean I can’t go visit places that can inspire my creativity. Near or far, I can find a space to inhabit temporarily that will fuel my spirit. I have a coaching client who discussed places to visit to inspire creativity. I frequently find going to the beach or taking a walk to uplift my spirit and inspire me. I haven’t found much local architecture to shift my mood, as much as I did when I would walk along the cobblestones of Prague or ride my bike through London. And, sometimes, I can find that just looking at a photo can return me to those spaces.

Do you have a space you go to that inspires you and your creativity? If so, what is it and where is it? How often do you visit it?
