Recycle, reuse those former skills and return to creativity

When I took on one of my recent assignments, it was in my former field of television. While I felt a little rusty, I soon realized that returning to a former skill is a great way to flex the creativity muscle. And it has been great in allowing me freedom to re-connect to a short, concise writing style, which is heard and not read. I appreciate that shift and that challenge.
While sometimes it might seem that there are no differences among writing styles in various industries, there are. Just ask an SEO writer or a technical writer or an indexer or an editor…I think you can see the point.
Often, if stuck in a routine or a rut, we tend to feel burnt out. Even if we are making progress in our careers, we may react negatively when asked to return to an old assignment or project. However, while we may love what we are doing, if there is not infusion of creative energy, we may find our work suffering and without the excitement we might have once enjoyed.
If viewed as an exercise in creativity, it is really a way of re-focusing. The ability to be open and be flexible to some of life’s changes can keep the creativity fire burning more brightly.
So, instead of infusing negativity into a return to old skills or to a project long forgotten, re-tune your reaction and see it as being able to reconnect to what may have brought you to the work in the first place.
