Musical crushes and surprising sounds

I’ve read some outstanding reviews of the Diane Birch album “Bible Belt” and some lukewarm reviews. You know, as with everything, each person to his or her own tastes. And, as with everything, we bring and take something from everything that surrounds us.
For example, I received “Bible Belt” CD to review and I was captivated by Birch’s voice. There is something hauntingly familiar to it. Her style is a mix of New Orleans rhythms and New York folk. As a words person, I found the lyrics to be surprising. It is almost as if you expect Diane Birch to deliver something and she brings out something else. Which is amazing, because when was the last time you actually heard something that kept you guessing?
To me, it is a creative album, especially for its variety and mixture of musical styles.
But, as I wrote, each person has their own tastes and, at one point, I doubted mine. So, when I put the CD on for my husband to hear, his first listen threw him off. It wasn’t quite what he expected from the album cover.
I mentioned how the lyrics and the music reminded me of something Aaron Neville would do. (There is something about Neville that I can’t get enough of. Fortunately, my husband tolerates my musical crush.)
To my husband, he said he could see how Birch’s voice and deliverance reminded people of Carole King. (In fact, one of the promotional photos of Birch is reminiscent of the cover for King’s “Tapestry.”) When he told me this, he blushed.
I guess I can tolerate it if he has a musical crush as well.
